Top-performing athletes returned to The Vale as champions after winning its sponsor’s prestigious indoor tournament at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
They won the under 13 and under 15 Delta Academies Trust's competition after both girls’ teams came top in their age categories and the boys finished third in both.
PE teacher Nicola Hewitt, who took the 21-strong team to south Yorkshire, said the competition was ‘fantastic’ from start to end.
“The students were consistent across the track and field events, and performed particularly well in the relays,” she said.
“This showed our strength in depth as a team, with every runner doing their bit to ensure we won the race.
“Events included the long jump, shot putt, triple jump and speed bounce and distances from 60m up to 800m.
“There were some exceptional performance by Evie Carolan (Year 9) and Robyn Davies (Year 8) in the 60m and 200m sprint. The girls won both of these events.”
Also winners were Harry Russell (shot putt), Jake Forman (800m), Elizabeth Bratton (triple jump), Nathan Shepherdson (long jump) and Jamie Beacroft (60m).
The event cumulated in the 4 x 200m relay. The Vale Academy won every relay race in the four age/gender categories.
Principal Nicola Williams was proud of the students’ efforts.
“They were up against stiff competition from large academies across the Trust,” she said.
“To return as overall winners with the shields was an outstanding performance and I’d like to congratulate everyone who represented the academy.
“The competition was a showcase of sporting excellence and I’m proud The Vale came out on top.”
Jamie Beacroft, in Year 9, could not believe he had won the 60m.
“I was really nervous before the race. It was the first time I’ve raced in spikes, but I think it gave me the added edge,” he said.
Fellow Year 9 student Jessie Meakin said: I loved being part of the athletics team. This is the third year that I have done it and it was just as enjoyable.”
