Girls tee up golf triumph

20th July 2017

A drive to engage more girls in golf benefited students from The Vale Academy.

More than 250 attended an initial taster day organised by Stacey Mitchell, the Regional Development Officer at The Golf Foundation.

Thirty girls then attended a six week course at Elsham Golf Club, led by Dane Duffin, its assistant professional.

Mr Richard Hughes a Physical Education teacher, who took the party each week, said it included fun activities and teaching to give the girls the basics to begin playing the game.

“Some sessions were indoors and one on the club practice ground,” said Mr Hughes. “As well as individual skills, the course encouraged co-operation and team work.”

The course concluded with a team-of-six event on nine holes.

The Vale took three teams out of the seven that attended, with its Year 7s triumphant with a score of 23, 1 under par.

They each received a new 7 iron club, a replica flag from The Open and a trophy as Elsham Girls’ Open champions.

Maggie May Bullass (12), who enjoyed the course, said:  “I can't believe that we won.”

She was joined in the winning team by captain Emelia Roach.

“The whole team played really well,” she said. “We encouraged each other every shot.”

Mr Hughes said the girls had had a “fantastic experience”.

“Massive thanks to The Golf Foundation and Elsham Golf Club. We look forward to returning as defending champions next summer,” he said.

Thirty students from The Vale were also trained by The Golf Foundation to act as young leaders at the Level 3 Tri-Golf Festival held at Hymers College as part of the Humber games.

Principal Nicola Williams was pleased so many girls had taken advantage of the opportunity.

“Golf’s a sport that is not as easy to experience or access as others,” she said. “The girls who attended have got a lot out of it and I’d also like to thank The Golf Foundation and everyone at Elsham Golf Club.”
